Community Activities & Outreach

In 2004, LLA President Jack Humphrey announced the formation the “Community Activities and Outreach Committee.”  The Lycoming Law Association Foundation had accumulated substantial assets and was looking for worthwhile projects consistent with the purpose of the Foundation “to cultivate the science of jurisprudence, improve the legal and judicial system and facilitate the administration of justice” for residents of Lycoming County.

The Lycoming Law Association, at its annual meeting in January 2005, approved the transfer of $25,000,00 of LLA funds to the Foundation, with $10,000.00 of this amount going to the Community Activities Fund and the balance to the Endowment Fund. With these assets available for current community projects, the Community Activities and Outreach Committee is to assist in selecting appropriate projects for funding.

The Community Activities and Outreach Committee held its initial meeting in June 2005, at which time the direction and future work of the Committee was discussed. The primary areas of discussion concerned how to make known the availability of the LLA Foundation grants for appropriate community projects, and future fundraising on behalf of the Foundation. With respect to promoting the availability of Foundation grants, the Committee discussed the parameters for the types of' projects we were looking for, recipient qualifications, identifying organizations that might be interested in submitting proposals, creating a webpage for the Foundation which would give interested persons and entities information about the Foundation and its desire to fund appropriate projects, and the creation of a document containing the Foundation's mission statement and other information concerning grant guidelines for circulation to community organizations.

Since then, the Committee has met several times a year to consider projects and grant requests and has awarded grants.  (See 2006's grants).

Historically, the members of the Lycoming Law Association have been deeply involved in various community activities as volunteers, and have been generous in their financial support of various community activities and programs.  While members have done so on an individual basis, the assets and organizational skills of the LLA and the Foundation are now being applied to these efforts.  In this way the community may benefit from the contributions and support lawyers give to the Foundation.

The “Community Activities and Outreach Committee” meets at least two times a year, and any LLA members interested in assisting in the efforts of the Committee are welcome to participate.  If you would like to be a member of this Committee, select the committee on the annual committee selection list or add your name to the committee on the committee selection page.
