Obituary - Bertram Smith Murphy

Bertram Smith Murphy of Wilmington, N.C., and of Williamsport, died Friday, August 1, 2003, at his residence.

He was born in Philadelphia on Feb. 2, 1928, a son of the late Bertram Smith Murphy and Bessie Griggs Murphy.

Mr. Murphy graduated from Montoursville High School in 1946 and received a Senatorial Scholarship to Bucknell University, graduating in 1952.

He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law in 1954. Thomas Wood was his preceptor to law school and he then joined that firm. He retired from Murphy, Butterfield and Holland in 2000.

He was a member of the Ross Club, High Rock Hunting Club, the Williamsport Tennis Club, founding member of Williamsport Riding Club and the Loyalsock Men’s Club. He was a member of the Montoursville Cemetery Board, the Wachovia Bank Board, a Mason, Solicitor for Montoursville School Board and the Faith United Methodist Church of Montoursville. He was an avid skier and tennis player and active in business and real estate development in Southeastern North Carolina.

He is survived by his wife Edith Lechner Murphy of Williamsport, four children; Marilyn Murphy Brown of Hughesville, Steven Murphy of Seattle, Wash., Elizabeth Steele of Cascade and Matthew Murphy of Wilmington, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and sister, Catherine Ulmer of Montoursville.
