Bar Leadership Conference

Four members of the LLA attended the recent Conference of County Bar Leaders annual seminar in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Gary Weber and Jack Humphrey attended as representatives of the LLA. Julieanne E. Steinbacher attended the Young Lawyer's Division New Admittee Conference, that took place simultaneously. Bill Carlucci, future PBA President, also participated in most of the programs.

As always, all who attended were overwhelmed with ideas for improving the organization. The annual seminar provides opportunities to meet with bar leaders from across the state, from the county and state level, and to hear new approaches for the operation of a bar organization that well serves its members. Supreme Court Justice J. Michael Eakin provided a bit of humor to the gathered group at lunch as he comically related a recent conversation with the Chief Justice.

The session topics ran the gamut: a roundtable session with the PBA President, preparing to be bar president, best projects, preserving bar history, latest on county legal reporters status, technology, and much more. One project of note was the Wilkes Barre Bar's billboard project to improve the image of the profession. Of course, the Wilkes Barre Bar is funded by bail forfeitures, and was the recent beneficiary of a $1 million "gift" from a drug dealer. While the LLA may not be able to afford to do all of the projects that some of the larger bars can undertake to perform, the CCBL seminar has always motivated our leadership to work for improvements to LLA services, and the 2003 session was no exception.

Strategic Planning Committee Meeting

The organizational meeting of the LLA Strategic Planning Committee will take place at noon on March 26, 2003. The primary focus of the first meeting will be to be to organize and to begin to consider the functions of the LLA that the committee will study. If you have not yet added your name to the list of members of this committee and you have an interest in improving the LLA, you may sign up for this, or any committee, at www.lycolaw.org/Committees/committees.asp or contact Gary Weber or Sue Feist. Members who have indicated an interest in the committee will receive notice of the meeting early this week.

LLA Foundation Update

The LLA Foundation has received $71,189.87 toward its goal of establishing a $100,000.00 endowment. The Board anticipates that income received from investments will be able to support programs providing legal services to the poor in Lycoming County, and to support other worthy LLA programs, when the goal is reached. Read more about the Foundation at www.lycolaw.org/public/legal_services/llaf.htm.

InCite

All members of the LLA are also members of the PBA. The PBA provides a number of benefits, including free online legal research with LexisNexis, through the InCite program. If you have not checked out the InCite Web site recently, you probably should do so, as the legal researching capabilities have improved since the initiation of the program. It is now easier to search databases and all U.S. Circuit Court databases are now included. InCite is found at the PBA Web.
