Summer Events

This year's Annual Picnic at Gray's Run was a great success! Everyone who attended had a great time, and the food was, as usual, terrific. This year saw a repeat of horseshoe champions (see below), and was the first year for the Annual LLA Golf Tournament, which will surely turn out to be a wonderful yearly event. Take a look at the pictures! www.lycolaw.org/news/news.asp?id=71

The Annual Crosscutter’s Ball Game was another fun time.  The sun was shining. The food was good. The company was great. The game was exciting (except that the home team lost 4-2, and left the bases loaded in the 9th). See the pictures from the great time we had July 9! www.lycolaw.org/news/news.asp?id=69

What Have the LLA Lawyers Done Lately?

Lycoming County lawyers serve on school boards and city and borough councils. They are officers and members of boards of local and national charitable organizations. State, national and local organizations have recognized LLA members for their professional and charitable achievements. Our members are leaders in the community.

Often the achievements of our members go unreported, or if reported, are quickly forgotten when some controversy involving an attorney hits the news. In many communities, the local bar associations are attempting to remedy the sometimes poor press received by lawyers by publicizing the achievements of its members. Luzerne County recently undertook a billboard campaign to point to the many ways that its lawyers improve the community.

The LLA does not have the resources to undertake an exotic image improvement campaign. The Association does, however, have the ability to publish and permanently preserve articles about the achievements of its members on its Web site. Recently, we have been doing just that. The articles appear briefly on the main page (www.lycolaw.org), and are kept permanently on the news page (www.lycolaw.org/news/news.asp?id=48). Although the site is no national powerhouse, it does receive over 30,000 hits per month.

If you wish to submit an item for publication, please email to gweber@lycolaw.org, using any format. Send a photo, if you wish. We will do our best to publicize the achievements of our members, for all to see.

COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT: Bench Bar Committee

The Bench Bar Committee of the Lycoming Law Association is a committee of judges and attorneys that meets four times per year to share issues of concern for discussion by the group. The discussions are quite lively at times. The Judges often provide the group with information concerning new court initiatives, and may use the group as a "sounding board" to explore acceptance among members of the bar. In addition, members of the bar may raise concerns about the operation of the court system or other issues important to lawyers.

The discussions are memorialized in regularly kept minutes and are accessible on the LLA Web site. The minutes for the July meeting are here: www.lycolaw.org/Committees/bench_bar/minutes070704.htm. You can read more about the Bench Bar Committee and review minutes of previous meetings on the page dedicated to the activities of the Committee: www.lycolaw.org/Committees/bench_bar/bench_bar_committee.asp.
