Retirement Banquet - Judge Clinton W. Smith

Plan to attend the banquet honoring President Judge Clinton W. Smith on Saturday, November 8, 2003 at DiSalvo's Restaurant, 341 East 4th Street, Williamsport. An interesting program has been planned. This Friday, October 24, 2003 is the deadline to send in your reservation. For more details and the reservation form, visit: www.lycolaw.org/event/pages/flyer.pdf.

LLA at the Crosscutters

Forty-two LLA members and family spent an evening with the Crosscutters, on the picnic deck. Although the weather allowed for dinner and a couple of innings of baseball, the game was rained out. Still, a good time was had by most, especially by the kids, who didn't mind the dampness. Check out the photo gallery: News & Articles. Better weather is guaranteed for next year's LLA excursion.

CLE - Protection from abuse case procedures

The Legal Services for the Indigent Committee of the LLA is sponsoring a seminar on protection from abuse case procedures on November 13, 2003 in the County Commissioner's meeting room, Executive Plaza, Williamsport. Registration begins at 8:15 P.M. and the seminar will run from 8:45 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. Three CLE credits available. Later that day, from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., a training session on the protection from abuse database (PFAD) system will take place. Information on both sessions may be found at www.lycolaw.org/event/pages/pfa-seminar.pdf.

Preservation of LLA History

During the summer, the LLA History Committee met over lunch to talk about preserving LLA history. Marshall Anspach's volume, Historical Sketches of the Bench and Bar of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania; 1795-1960, was published in 1961 and updated and reprinted by the Bar History Committee in 1989. The Committee decided that the time has come to prepare an update to Historical Sketches, with an anticipated publication date of 2004. Later this year the Committee will distribute questionnaires to current members for the purpose of updating biographical information. Look for the questionnaire in the next month or so, and please take the time to respond so that the update will be complete.

The Committee will also begin to compile photographs and other materials to begin to preserve the rich and interesting history Lycoming County bench and bar. These materials will be published on the Lycolaw Website. The LLA presently offers some historical data on its history page at www.lycolaw.org/history/history.html . The Committee hopes to "beef up" the material offered there to prevent the loss of significant historical data from the ravages of time. If you can provide materials that are of historical significance and wish to have these materials published, contact LLA President Gary Weber (gweber@lycolaw.org) to make arrangements to have the materials scanned and added to the database. Any item used will be returned after scanning.

Lycoming Reporter Changes

Lycoming Reporter advertising rates increased effective September 26, 2003. This is the first change in rates in many years and the increases reflect the increased costs of publication and administrative costs of the LLA. The new rate schedule is found here: www.lycolaw.org/lycrep/rates.htm

The LLA Executive Committee has also decided to discontinue the publication of full text of opinions in the Lycoming Reporter, effective December 31, 2003. Rather, the Reporter will publish summaries of all opinions issued by the court, with directions on how to secure the full opinions from the Lycolaw.org Website. Generally, the Reporter published between 20 and 25 of the 240 to 300 court opinions issued each year. At the same time, since 1999, the LLA has been publishing nearly all of the Lycoming County Court of Common Pleas opinions on its Website at www.lycolaw.org/Cases/search.asp. The new approach will provide a more comprehensive resource to LLA members.
