Here is how it works! The Mentoring Program pairs YLD members with established attorneys willing to sit down for informal discussions on topics in the established attorney’s area of expertise. A YLD member desiring a mentor contacts the Mentoring Committee and indicates what area of the law or aspect of the practice of law he or she is specifically interested in learning more about. The Mentoring Committee will consult the list of willing, established attorneys and contacts a well-matched mentor. The current list of attorneys who have agreed to serve as mentors has been posted. The mentor is contacted to check his or her availability before any contact information, or even a name, is passed on to the YLD member. Depending on the preference of the established attorney, the Mentoring Committee can either simply pass along a name and phone number or schedule an initial lunch meeting between the parties. No preparation will be expected; the established attorney is to be a mentor, not a professor. Often, it will be the most obvious facts of daily practice that the initiate most needs to hear. Subsequent contacts will be worked out between the two attorneys. If you are willing to share some of your experience with a member of the Young Lawyers Division, please add your name to the Mentor List using the form, or contact Jessica Engel at the LLA Office. Please take the time to help a new lawyer the everyday challenges of the practice of law.
