Obituary - George M. Hess Jr.

George HessGeorge M. Hess Jr., 84 of 345 St. David’s Road, Williamsport, died Friday, March 10, 2006, at Manor Care North.

Born Aug. 24, 1921, in Williamsport, he was a son of George M. Hess Sr. and Margaret (Swank) Hess.

George was a 1939 graduate of Hughesville High School. After attending two years at Asbury College, he served in the Army in Europe during WWII. Mr. Hess graduated from Bucknell University in 1947 and received his L.L.B. degree from Harvard Law School in 1950.

In 1959 he was elected District Attorney of Lycoming County. For most of his 39 year legal career he was associated with the Hess and Hess Law Firm in Hughesville and Williamsport.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Attig Hess, with whom he celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on Nov. 27, 2005.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, Gail Engdahl of Montoursville, Mark Hess of Cogan Station and Sylvia Hess of Reading; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Hess of Asheville, N.C.; and one brother, Barry Hess of Hughesville.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, C. Max Hess, W. Robert Hess and James R. Hess.

A memorial service will be held 8 p.m. Monday at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with the Rev. Eric Hartshaw officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
