Scenes from the Gray's Run Picnic
Humphrey and Waffenschmidt - LLA horseshoe champions, two years running and this year's golf outing champions. Obviously the team to beat next year.
Horseshoes - Seven teams of accomplished horseshoe athletes practiced for 12 months to challenge the defending champions, Humphrey Waffenschmidt. With four ringers by Tom Waffenschmidt in the first round match, the team easily advanced to the semi-finals. Humphrey, who is now finding his stride, complemented Waffenschmidt’s performance well in the second round match, and the team easily advanced to the finals, where they met the team of Wilk and Collins. Although the defending champs were leading most of the match, Wilk and Collins proved to be strong opponents, always staying close behind. As crowds gathered in increasing numbers, the match grew in intensity. The game was seemingly over at 12 to 11 in favor of the champs, when Waffenschmidt threw another ringer. Collins, however, undaunted, was able to top it, and the match continued. The thrill of victory was secured when, not long thereafter, Humphrey was able to get a ringer which Wilk was unable to top.
Golf - The first annual Lycoming Law Association golf tournament was held on the morning of the day of the Bar picnic. A total of four (4) teams were competing in the scramble format tournament. As the round started, a number of side wagers were placed among three of the four teams. When the McNerney Page team, thanks to a 300+ yard drive by Ryan Tira, birdied the very first hole, they sure looked like the team to beat. Another impressive drive on the second hole resulted in yet another birdie for the McNerney Page team. After the first two holes, the McNerney Page team unfortunately had some consistency problems, and they were never able to go lower than minus 2. Bob Seiferth, Gary Black, Judy Berkheiser, and David Wilk emerged as the front runners after the front 9, shooting a 4 under par. Thereafter, however, they were unable to convert any further opportunities on the back 9, and therefore finished in second place at 4 under. The Rieders Travis team of Tom Waffenschmidt, Jack Humphrey, Gary Harris and Scot Waters started slow and, after a bogey on the 9th hole, was three strokes behind the Seiferth group. When making the turn, the Rieders Travis team purchased some much needed refreshments on this hot, muggy day, which allowed them to birdie five of the last nine holes. Minus 6 therefore proved to be the winning score. The team of Joe Campagna, Jeff and Jennifer Ayers and Mike Wiley came in fourth place.
