LLA Foundation Awards Grant to Taber Museum

The Lycoming Law Foundation recently made a substantial grant to the Lycoming County Historical Society, to be used by its Thomas T. Taber Museum for archiving, researching, categorization, & organization of local historical legal documents. The award of $4000.00 was presented to Historical Society officers on November 16, 2022.

The Historical Society has a long history of providing housing and care for many of the County’s treasures. Only a small portion of these items are on display. Many of the items are archival materials, too fragile to display for an extended period of time. However, these items are reviewed for free by local historians, students, genealogists, and history seekers for potential usefulness in their individual avenues of historical research. Among the materials are a number of legal documents relating to the citizens of the county. Land disputes, businesses that dissolved, divorce proceedings, criminal activity and other legally documented issues are outlined in these materials dating from the 18th through the 20th centuries. Many of these historical legal documents have been donated to the Historical Society, where they will be preserved and protected by county residents.  The legal wording of many of these documents is often times beyond comprehension of a work study student or intern and this grant’s funding will support the compensation of a person familiar with legal terminology. The museum will abstract the legal documents, transferring the pertinent information to our collection management database for community member research and over-all historical preservation.

The Lycoming County Historical Society and Taber Museum offer many varying programs to the entire surrounding community and to hundreds of visitors to the Williamsport region every year. Just some of which are, historical exhibits and chronicled information about the north-central Pennsylvania region. A comprehensive library and archive that houses thousands of rare and historical materials from people, events, and places in our area. The museum offers educational tours, and with expert staff, fine collections, and fully accessible facilities, the Taber Museum designs and delivers educational services to hundreds of children and adults annually and engages students in the excitement of learning through  curriculum-linked programs. The museum also offers monthly presentations on various topics. The LCHS also offers Student Historian Essay Competitions. There are in-depth exhibits on American Indians from our region, our great lumber heritage, farming, crafts & industry, the Shempp model train collection, a fine arts gallery, and rotating seasonal exhibits.
