Law Day 2003 Events

Every year, on May 1, all Americans celebrate Law Day. The Lycoming Law Association joins national, state and local bar associations, businesses, and schools, in conducting  programs on the rule of law in a constitutional democracy.  An annual essay and artwork contest is the highlight of the celebration.

Entries were received from hundreds of Lycoming County school students. Six winning essays and five winning pieces of art were selected by the Law Day Committee.  In the elementary division, essayists were asked to write on, "Should schools control what clothes you can wear to school?"  The winners:  Donald Frisch - Grade 02 - Ashkar Elementary School; Paul Pastore - Grade 03 - Four Mile Elementary School; Elaina Stone - Grade 05 - St. Joseph Elementary School.  In the secondary division, essays were submitted on the topic, "Should the government control what can be put on the Internet?"  Successful writers are:  Amber Lee - Grade 07 - Curtin Middle School; Brittany Heikes - Grade 07 - Lycoming Valley Middle School; Sarah Esaa - Grade 09 - Williamsport High School.  Artists who submitted winning pieces:  Denay Wodrig - Grade 02 - Ashkar Elementary School; Steven Slocum - Grade 05 - McCall Middle School; Conor Norris - Grade 05 - St. Joseph Elementary School; Sarah Weber - Grade 07 - McCall Middle School; Emily Bixler - Grade 11 - Hughesville High School.

This year's Law Day celebration concluded with a reception in honor of recently commissioned United States District Court Judge John E. Jones III at The Old Corner.
