on "Giving Back"
LLA member Tricia Shipman was recently featured in a Pennsylvania
Lawyer article entitled, "Giving Back: Lawyers as
Community Builders." Shipman was quoted extensively on her
experiences in serving on several local boards of community
organizations.
The article, in the May - June, 2008 edition of the Pennsylvania
Bar Association magazine, discussed the ways that a group of
Pennsylvania lawyers have chosen to commit time to their
community.
Shipman has served, for several years, on the boards of the
Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity and Friends of the James V
Brown Library.
At first she was honored by her selection to serve on the
boards. "I had never been on a board before, so I thought,
'Oh my gosh, my boss wants me I to join the board. I must be so
special!'" she said. Cruel reality revealed itself soon
enough. "After you join, you realize they're always
looking for somebody!" she laughed.
She soon realized that the positions were "hands-on" and
required a great deal of work on her part. Still, she said
that she does not regret her service, as the work is "very
rewarding."
